The universe of comedy podcasting is an ever-expanding thing, bubbling with combustible potential and–sadly–lots of dark matter. You never know who’s going to enter the fray.  There are common denominators that seem to bind a lot of these shows together–certain people that resonate whenever they show up as guests on Comedy Bang Bang, WTF, Nerdist, Joe Rogan, etc.

One of those people is Andy Daly. Daly made the sometimes difficult transition from guest to host in February on Earwolf with The Andy Daly Podcast Pilot Project.

andy daily podcastHere’s the premise: Daly and Superego’s Matt Gourley present audiences pilots for shows submitted to Earwolf. After listening to the half-hour teaser with Scott Aukerman,  I knew this thing would click. There was just too much talent involved for it to suck.

The show manages to walk the line between subtle observational humor and outright absurdity. It plays into Daily’s acumen for improvisational sketch and over-the-top role playing. Thankfully, we now have another stage for his stable of characters.

With the help of Paul F. Tompkins, Daly’s show rolled into podcastia with a confidence and togetherness typically reserved for veterans of the medium. Timing was impeccable, and the production was top notch.

In a recent episode, Rockin’ and A Rollin’ with Wolfman Hot Dog, Daly was joined by the great Maria Bamford to discuss the ins and outs of an aspiring Sha Na Na member. Think Comedy Bang Bang with less testosterone and more passive-aggressive finesse. This one’s going to be one of the greats, mark my words.
